Sodium hydroxide (NaOH), also known as lye, is an essential ingredient in soap making. When sodium hydroxide granules or flakes are mixed with a liquid, a lye solution is formed, which, when mixed with fats and oils, causes a chemical reaction called saponification. The result of saponification is beautiful handmade soap. Making soap is a wonderfully fun and addictive profession.

Olive oil BP also meets British Pharmacopeia (BP) specifications and is therefore referred to as pharmaceutical grade. Pharmaceutical grade is useful when strong odor and color are not desired, but all the qualities of the oil must be preserved.

It is the oldest solid soap. It was first found in Babylon around 2,500 BC.
Aleppo soap is the original “all-in-one” product and is perfect for all skin types, including skin prone to dermatitis and other itchy, inflammatory skin conditions. It can be used to wash the face, body and hair and lathers well to make a natural shaving cream.

Ingredients Aleppo soap recipe

155 gr Water
76 gr Sodium hydroxide
125 gr Olive oil
75 gr Palm oil
75 gr Rice bran oil
125 gr of coconut oil
100 gr Laurel oil
25 gr Fragrance oil

Instructions Aleppo soap recipe

  • Combine all the oils (except the fragrance oil) in a suitable bowl and mix. Melt the coconut oil first in a microwave or au bain marie.
  • Make a lye solution with sodium hydroxide and water. Add the lye slowly into the water cup to avoid overheating. Use protective gloves and goggles to avoid accidents.
  • Slowly add the lye solution to the oil bowl while mixing with a hand blender. When all the lye solution is ready, add the fragrance oil.
  • Process for 1 more minute and then put your soap in your mold.

Aleppo soap is completely plant-based and biodegradable with no added preservatives, dyes or perfumes. Laurel oil is known for its excellent anti-inflammatory, antiseptic and disinfectant properties. Because of these properties, Aleppo soap is recommended as a natural remedy for eczema, psoriasis, acne and dermatitis.
