What is a dermatological patch test?

A dermatological patch test is a standard test performed to assess the skin tolerability of cosmetic products. This test is performed on a group of subjects and is essential for determining whether a product is suitable for use on normal or sensitive skin. Through this test, companies can demonstrate that their products are safe and will not cause adverse skin reactions.

Why is a patch test important?

Consumers expect cosmetic products to be safe, regardless of their skin type. By conducting a dermatological patch test, manufacturers and brands can prove that their products do not cause skin irritation or allergic reactions. Not only is this a requirement in many regulations, but it also increases consumer confidence and improves a brand’s reputation.

Test Methodology

In our dermatological patch test, the cosmetic products to be tested are applied to the skin of volunteers. The test is conducted under controlled conditions and under the supervision of dermatologists or other qualified specialists.

Test procedure

  1. Selection of subjects:
    • We work with a test panel of 20 subjects, who are carefully selected based on skin type and medical history.
  2. Application of the product:
    • Small amounts of the cosmetic product are applied to a specific area of skin (usually the back or forearm) using an occlusive or semi-occlusive patch.
    • The patch remains on the skin for 24 to 48 hours.
  3. Observation period:
    • After removing the patch, the skin is assessed for any reactions, such as redness, swelling, itching or irritation.
    • Skin is reassessed after 24 and 72 hours to determine any delayed reactions.
  4. Results Analysis:
    • Test results are documented and analyzed.
    • Products that do not cause significant skin reactions are classified as “dermatologically tested” or “suitable for sensitive skin.”

Patch test for normal skin vs. sensitive skin

Our dermatological patch tests can be performed on both normal and sensitive skin types to get a complete picture of a product’s skin tolerance.

Patch test for normal skin

  • This test group consists of subjects with healthy skin with no known allergies or skin problems.
  • Skin reactions are evaluated based on mild to moderate irritation.
  • This is a basic requirement to determine the overall skin safety of the product.

Patch test for sensitive skin

  • This group consists of subjects who are sensitive to cosmetic products and are prone to redness, irritation or other skin reactions.
  • Here, stricter criteria are applied and extra attention is paid to possible allergic reactions.
  • If a product does not cause negative reactions in this test group, it can be safely recommended for people with sensitive skin.

Benefits of our patch test

  • Reliable results: Our tests are conducted according to dermatological guidelines and scientific methods.
  • Panel size: A 20-person panel provides sufficient data to draw reliable conclusions.
